379 More Days

I am working at an offsite location this week. I’m doing something I enjoy, which is building servers and working on technical projects. It takes me away from just management activities and constant conference calls. But I am very clear in my decision to leave this job as soon as I am eligible.

Why? I don’t like the management, I don’t like the pace of the work and the lack of management support in getting there, I don’t like being in the position of leading a team of people who really work for someone else. More about that later. And did I mention that I don’t like the management?

My team is great, I feel really blessed that they take ownership of projects and run with them. Upper management should also feel blessed, but if they do I never hear about it. Maybe I will one day. I let my team know how much I appreciate them, though. I think that is so important.

I do like working with the technology, learning new technology, solving technical problems, and working with others to solve problems. I don’t like having to herd multiple facilities into following a standard (in this case a desktop standard) when I have no management support to get there. There will never be agreement and stakeholders will continue to want to do things the way they always have. I and others working towards the same goal make progress one step forward and two steps back.

One day, maybe, everything will fall into place here, but I most likely will not be working here anymore. I will instead be spending my days doing what gives me joy and personal satisfaction. Only 379 days to go. That’s really not a long time. It’s time to write about that instead!
